Kindergarten Thematic Units

Language Arts
In kindergarten, students begin to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. The Language Arts are integrated throughout all subjects. Children learn the names of letters and the corresponding sounds of each letter or groups of letters. They learn to put sounds together to make words, and then learn to make sentences. Through stories, poems, songs, and chants, children explore language as a vehicle for self expression. Students connect their own life experiences to the books read in class both through classroom discussions and through daily writing practice. Kindergartners draw, paint, sing, act out, and discover new things as they develop their talents and gifts as readers and writers.

Social Studies
In kindergarten, students learn to share, take turns, follow rules, and respect themselves and each other. They learn to be good citizens as they are introduced to stories about extraordinary people in the world today and long ago. Children learn about the positive values of family and community by exploring the unique gifts they bring to their families, their class, and their school.

Mathematics
In kindergarten, children investigate, build, create, count, compare, sort, measure, and identify common objects in their own environment. Students work together to build thinking skills and solve problems related to their world. Children master mathematics concepts by playing games and exploring materials.

Science
In kindergarten, students participate in many hands-on activities that are designed to help students ask questions about the world around them. Using the five senses, children study animals, plants, plant products, and the earth and it's environment. Students learn to observe, describe, categorize, classify, and compare. The children communicate what they have learned about their discoveries to the class in ways that honor their own gifts and talents.
